Should I just transfer my TSP account to an IRA?
You could, but be sure to look at the pros and cons closely, in consultation with your family members and possibly a financial adviser.

By transferring the money, you would gain a wider range of investment choices from the IRA provider than the TSP offers. However, the TSP’s administrative charges are generally far lower, and only the TSP offers access to the government securities G Fund, which provides the returns of mid-term government securities with none of the downside risk of investing in bonds of that duration (mainly involving loss of face value when interest rates go up). Also examine how the withdrawal options of your IRA provider compare with what’s available in the TSP and your satisfaction with the customer service of each.
