What is the FERS “minimum retirement age?”
It is an age used in certain retirement eligibility combinations under FERS (but not under the Civil Service Retirement System). The MRA was age 55 until 2003, when it began to climb by two months per year (paralleling the gradual rise in the age for receiving unreduced benefits under Social Security). Thus, the MRA reached age 56 in 2009, where it will remain through 2020; beginning in 2021 it will again rise by two months per year until it reaches 57.
