What’s the difference between a durable power of attorney and a health care power of attorney?

A durable power of attorney allows you to appoint a substitute decision-maker to act on your behalf for financial decisions. By having such a document, you can avoid the court costs, legal fees, time and inconvenience of your family going to a court to appoint a guardian or conservator should you become legally incompetent or disabled.

A health care power of attorney (sometimes referred to as an advance medical directive) allows you to appoint a substitute decision-maker or agent to make specific health care decisions for you if a physician determines that you are incapable of making an informed decision.
