Can I put my Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance policy in a trust?

Yes. A life insurance trust makes the insurance not includable in the gross estate of the insured. It allows the estate to avoid taxes while providing a ready source of liquid assets. Federal employees are allowed to include their FEGLI policies in such trusts through an assignment, using Standard Form 76-10, available at www.opm.gov/forms.
