Can I change my working schedule for a volunteer activity?
Agencies are encouraged, but not required, to approve requests for changes in work schedules or time off to allow employees to engage in volunteer activities, while giving due consideration to the effect of the employee’s absence or change in duty schedule on work operations and productivity. This can include, among other purposes, activities associated with the annual Combined Federal Campaign and activities designed to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or math.

Time off can include annual leave, leave without pay, use of compensatory time off, or, in limited circumstances, excused absence. A change in work schedule might involve use of alternative work schedules and use of credit hours earned under an existing flexible work schedule.
