How would a furlough affect my retirement benefits?
Generally, it wouldn’t. Since both the Civil Service Retirement System and the Federal Employees Retirement System allow for credit of up to six months of nonpay status in a calendar year, furlough days generally will count toward the total amount of creditable service. Likewise, although there is a loss of actual pay during the furlough period, a furlough does not result in a change in rate of basic pay and therefore does not affect a high-3 salary computation.
