NTEU hopeful on budget boost

Federal employee unions have been piling on praise of proposed increases in funding for agencies next year, as laid out in the White House budget plan—and the National Treasury Employees Union is sounding its own optimistic note. 

“For the first time in four years, federal employees can read the president’s budget proposal and feel hopeful about the future,” NTEU President Tony Reardon said of the administration’s budget, which was released June 4. 

“This budget proposal is a recognition that our nation’s nonpolitical, career civil servants are worthy of investment,” said Reardon.

The proposed budget would provide “funding levels that enable federal employees to have the tools and staffing they need to do their jobs,” the union said in a release. 

For example, there would be an added $13.5 billion for the IRS—which NTEU says would pay for an additional 8,493 full-time employees, compared with the agency’s FY 2021 funding. At Customs and Border Protection, an added $150 million is proposed for the Office of Field Operations. There would be $2 billion more for the Environmental Protection Agency, and $25 billion additional for the Department of Health and Human Services. 

While Reardon applauded the administration’s proposed 2.7% increase in pay for FY 2022 across the federal civil service, he added that his union is aiming higher—for a 3.2% bump.  

“A 2.7 percent average pay increase for federal employees,” Reardon said. “While this is a step in the right direction, NTEU is working with Congress to pass the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates Act … which would provide federal employees a 3.2% average pay increase next year.” 

The House and Senate versions of the bill Reardon’s union is supporting are H.R. 392 and S. 561.
