FEEA celebrates 35th anniversary

For three-and-a-half decades, federal employees and their families have had a resource to draw on in tough times: the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA).
FEEA—which this month commemorated its 35th anniversary as part of Federal Recognition Week—is offering gratitude to backers and asking feds to join in on events that raise cash for a good cause.
“This year, we especially want to thank all of the federal employees who have done America’s business during an extremely difficult pandemic year,” the Fund currently states on its website. “Thank you for making it #GovPossible for essential programs and services to continue serving citizens across the country and around the world!”
Now, the organization is soliciting help from feds, through participation in over a month of fundraisers dubbed the Feds in Motion 35 Challenge.
From May 2 through June 5, FEEA and its partners are asking feds to join in the Challenge’s broad variety of exercises and group activities.
“[It’s] all about moving in your favorite way—walk, run, bike, swim, or roll your wheelchair on your favorite route—to reach the goal of 35 miles (or more!) in 35 days,” the Fund says online. “In honor of FEEA’s 35th Anniversary and the Challenge, some of our supporters in the federal community wanted to offer their congratulations via video. Check out the videos to lean more!”
And don’t forget—participants will not only be helping their fellow feds, but they’ll receive a variety of swag. The list includes T-shirts* (with a choice of men’s or women’s styles!), participation medals, digital bibs, easy ways to upload your mileage anytime and a leaderboard, digital finisher certificates, fun digital badges for mileage milestones and fundraising achievements, special Wellness Wednesday events with prize drawings, prizes for top fundraisers and other commemorations of their help.
Federal employee unions helped to found and continue to support FEEA, and are currently boosting its anniversary year events.
“Happy 35th birthday FEEA!” said the enthusiastic president of the National Treasury Employees Union, Tony Reardon, on the union’s website. “NTEU has been there from the start, as a founding member.”
“We’re honored to be a partner in your important work,” he continued. “You know, FEEA means so much, not only to our members but to those who give generously each year to help their colleagues in their greatest hours of need.”
“FEEA is there in the aftermath of major storms, during government shutdowns and throughout this devastating pandemic,” he said. “FEEA has helped our members who find themselves facing unexpected bills and expenses. And FEEA helps make college a little more affordable for federal employees and their family members through your scholarship program.”
Other unions have also rallied support for FEEA in this anniversary year. For example, the American Federation of Government Employees offered its recognition this winter for FEEA’s help for feds during the pandemic, and expansion of into free, on-demand tutoring.
FEEA, being a charity aimed exclusively at fed families to help with emergencies and education costs, has long held a unique place in the lives of feds. The organization has helped over 55,000 federal families to date, according to its own tally.
“The Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) is the only independent, nonproﬁt 501c3 organization devoted solely to providing emergency ﬁnancial assistance and scholarships to our dedicated civilian federal and postal public servants and their families,” the Fund states on its site.
The FEEA statement goes on to note its other services, “FEEA also has a for-profit subsidiary, FEEA Childcare Services, which administers childcare subsidy programs on behalf of a number of federal agencies.”
