Air Force Chief: Commanders could lose their jobs if they’re not in shape

The Air Force has the second-highest percentage of obese troops in the military, and the branch is aiming to rein in on the problem by requiring commanders to be in shape, the Military Times reports.

Speaking at the Air Force Association's 2019 Air, Space & Cyber Conference on Sept. 17, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein said he will launch a new initiative designed to ensure that troops in command billets are in good physical shape throughout the year, or risk losing their job, the article reports, adding that he said, “’If you are a commander in the United States Air Force, you are fit. There is no other discussion.”

Goldfein did not give details about the new initiative, which plans to target the roughly 18 percent of all airmen that are obese, but the initiative is part of an ongoing overhaul of Air Force fitness, the report notes.

Obesity is an epidemic due the uncontrolled over consumption of calories from booze, fast food and lack of physical activity. An hour of regular exercise every day along with dietary restrictions pays off in the long term especially when it comes to morbidity and mortality.

Go to the gym, eat less, seek medical help if needed, stay away from booze. The pounds will peal off in no time.

Hey do as nature indicates. Reduce the number of calories taken in on a daily basis; reduce or eliminate the booze and happy hours; go to the gym and talk with a professional who will tailor a program. Since they are active duty, there are gyms and individuals who can tailor an exercise program. It is the responsibility of the individual to stay reasonably fit for duty. Aging and obesity can be managed by the appropriate medical supervision.

Why? Why does _every_ soldier have to fit? That kind of limits us in this age of obesity and franky, if you're sitting behind a desk or in front of a computer trying to hack your way thru the enemy's defenses, why do you have to be in tip top physical shape? Only give guns to those in shape. That'd be enough of an incentive for enough soldiers.
