OPM pushing through retirement claim backlog

The Office of Personnel Management is steadily reducing its federal retirement claim backlog since reaching its seasonal surge of applications at the beginning of the year.

As of the end of March, OPM processed 13,712 retirement claims, up from 10,543 in February and 8,162 in January.

Historically, the agency sees a surge claims each January and February as many federal employees put in their papers to retire during the first six weeks of the year.

OPM received 13,264 claims in January; 10,792 in February; and 10,084 in March.

Current figures show that the inventory of unprocessed claims now stands at 20,201, down from 23,370 in February and 23,121 at the start of the year.

It took an average of 50 days to process a claim in March, compared with 58 in January and February.

The figures come from OPM’s monthly claims processing progress report available on the OPM website.

OPM personnel conduct very good work considering their limited resources and FTE's. Retirement issues are resolved efficiently especially when one calls the toll free number. Remember do not get angry or snide with the person trying to help, they did not cause the problem in the first place.

OPM did a great efficient job in processing my retirement claim along with answering specific questions that did come up during the transition. The only complaint (very minor) is that the OPM retirement home page needs better clarification.
