Postal union leader: No international mail for U.S. if it pulls out of treaty

If the U.S. pulls out of an international postal treaty, there will be no international mail or packages sent to the U.S., an official with a 192-country postal union, says, the Associated Press reports.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent the union a letter announcing the U.S’.s plans to pull out of the treaty in 12 months because of a multi-level trade dispute with Beijing, the article notes, adding that theTrump administration says the treaty allows China to ship packages to the U.S. at discounted rates at the expense of American businesses.

Pascal Clivaz, deputy director-general of the Switzerland-based, 144-year-old Universal Postal Union, said if the U.S. pulls out, it will lose access to special codes needed to send and receive mail internationally, according to the article, which notes that the next step is to continue negotiating.

What kind of idiocy is this?!? International mail service has nothing to do with a trade dispute with China. The US doesn't have to go through the UPU to handle China shipping packages at low rates. That's a trade issue. The US has been a member of the UPU since it was founded -- in 1874. The UPU's purpose is to ensure that people and businesses can communicate with each other in an orderly manner. It has been throughout its history a non-partisan, non-political organization that has really never been embroiled in a major scandal or turmoil. They even arranged for mail to be shipped in and out of the Gaza strip without the vitriol and political nonsense that one would see at the UN. There is no sane reason for the US to leave the UPU!

Pulling out is another "knee jerk" reaction to a "perceived" problem.
