VA nursing homes under investigation

After media reports about inadequate care for veterans in agency nursing homes, the House Veterans Affairs Committee has launched an investigation into the 133 nursing homes managed by Veterans Affairs, USA Today reports.

According to the report, two media outlets obtained an internal memo that gave almost half of VA nursing homes the lowest possible score in secret internal rankings, and in general VA nursing homes scored worse than private nursing homes on a majority of key quality indicators, including rates of anti-psychotic drug prescription and decline in daily living skills.

The VA operates nursing homes in 46 states, and has tracked detailed information about the quality of care they provide since at least 2011 that includes ranking system but has kept everything secret until last month, the report notes.

The nursing homes at WLA are marginal at best. Most of the staff are there to collect a paycheck for as little effort as possible, with a possible exception of the RN's. I am a veteran, worked at WLA for 12 years, and have serious doubts about being in a VA nursing home based on the experiences I had while working there.

VA...what help other than Dr. visits which require long drives and are too much for older Vets. Medicare and Blue Cross has to be used for Korean Era disability.
