The long expected “retirement wave” of federal employees is beginning to materialize, with roughly 14 percent of feds eligible to retire today, Government Executive reports.
According to the report, nearly 1.5 in ten federal employees are eligible to retire today, and in five years the number will hit three in 10, about 30 percent; the Housing and Urban Development Department has the highest rate of employees eligible to retire of any major agency in government, at nearly 24 percent.
Federal officials have for years warned that when the baby boomer generation reaches pension eligibility, there will be a wave of retirements in the federal workforce, the article notes, adding that over the last 10 years, total retirements across government have increased slightly but also fell for three consecutive years.
