New resources available for TSP Blended Retirement System

The Thrift Savings Plan on June 2 released two new resources aimed at helping service members better understand the new retirement system ahead of its launch next year.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, all service members will automatically be enrolled in the Blended Retirement System, which combines the military’s defined benefit plan with a defined contribution plan—similar to the retirement offering found in most civilian 401K plans.

Service members with less than 12 years of service as of Dec. 31, 2017 (entered the service after Dec. 31, 2005 but before Jan. 1, 2018) will have the choice to either enroll with BRS or remain with the High Three system. Service members with 12 or more years of service will remain in the High Three system.

TSP has made available a fact sheet and a YouTube video to help members that have the option between to the two retirement systems decide whether to opt in to BRS or remain in the current system.

The fact sheet is available at https://www.tsp.gov/PDF/formspubs/tspfs1.pdf and the video can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNC5O_nlL4Q.
