New mileage reimbursement rates posted

The General Services Administration has posted the new mileage reimbursement rates for personally owned vehicles that took effect Jan. 1.

The new rate, if use of a privately owned automobile is authorized or if no government-owned auto is available, is $0.535 per mile, down from $0.54 in 2016. The rate if a government-owned vehicle is available is $0.17, down from $0.19.

The motorcycle rate, which was $0.51 in 2016, is $0.505 for 2017. The airplane mileage rate for 2017 is $1.15 per mile, down from $1.17 last year.

GSA said it sets the rates by reviewing the annual standard automobile study contracted for by the Internal Revenue Service, as well as by considering other issues, including fuel costs, vehicle depreciation and expenses, and other factors.
