Federal Benefits Q&A

Question: "How do you fill out the TSP-3 form and still preserve a "children by representation" (i.e., per stirpes) inheritance? The TSP-3 application form specifically states on page 3 instructions that you cannot name contingent beneficiaries to the contingent beneficiaries you list."

Answer: "Have you looked into setting up a trust as beneficiary of your TSP account? In so doing, you can name beneficiaries of your TSP account in any way you want, including your desire to name "children by representation" (per stirpes). The trust would have to be set up through an attorney in your state. You would name the trust as beneficiary of your TSP account on Form TSP-3.
