Gov Career

Looking for the door ...

The Office of Personnel Management announced this week that it is going to beef up its staff to try to get federal retirees’ claims through the system faster.

We know that a good number of recently retired or soon-to-retire feds follow this blog as well as the many who are in their earlier career stages.

So at this time, we’d like to ask these veteran feds to step forward to recount their experiences getting (or not getting) through the system.

Care to share?

Well first and foremost I don't blame unions nor anyone in particular for the delays that OPM has had in processing retirements. It seems people try to blame all the worlds problems on unions. The union protects the working man and yes the unions have made mistakes but let them go away and gradually big business will take it all away. But back to OPM. I retired in July 2010 and it has been 10 months and I have still not been finalized. Yes I am frustrated. I have contacted my congressman and everything but still I'm stuck waiting. I retired on disability and apparently finalizing diasbility retirements take longer than normal retirements. Really makes no sense. You would think disability retirements would get priority because there unexpected retirements. But who knows. I can't believe OPM has any malace in delaying retirement finalizations. I just think this is all the result of the doing more with less philosophy of todays government. You can do more with less if you have technology in place to take the place of workers but OPM has no such technology in place. I really have to believe OPM is just horribly overworked. Blame the small government republicans for that. It was walstreet who we bailed out but it's main street who we blame. Typical republican rederic.

OPM is the epitome of EPIC FAIL. Brought to you by the same government bureaucracy that will run your health care programs. Protected by the Unions who don't give a rat's rump about work ethics. ALL of them should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Oh, wait, I forgot - - they were busy assuring equal benefits for same-sex relationships. Amazing how quickly they moved on that one, so we know it can be done.

One thing managers had is when they don't get their bonuses. I am sure that OPM is no different. I propose that we who are still waiting for full retirement benefigts( 3 months for me)DEMAND that OPM does not issue any bonuses until all retirees get their money. HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES, OPM!

I retired effective 1 Jan 10; I filed my papers several months earlier, although I had my paperwork prescreened by the Army 8 months before my retirement date. My first partial check arrived in March, but my full check did not arrive until June. I talked with one person whose first check didn't show up for seven months. I forgot to have money set aside for state taxes, so I am making that up by very large deductions. It is easy to forget to sign up for the tax part. I talked with the people at the NARFE local chapter; this is a common issue. By the way, NARFE helps keep you informed on Congressional issues which will impact you; I urge all to join.
