Federal employee retirements have increased substantially, year-over-year, in this second year of the COVID era.
There were nearly 9,000 retirements in July, up over 2,000 compared with the same month a year ago, according to Office of Personnel Management data reported by the Federal News Network.
So far in 2021, five of seven months with stats available saw federal employee retirement filing increases ranging from just over 10% to over 47%.
Unfortunately for those feds who are retiring, staff processing the surge of claims could not keep up with that increased tempo. In fact, the lag time for processing now surpasses three months, the story reports.
The FNN story’s bottom line message: Expect more delays. The processing backlog is over 50% higher than it was last year.
