Feds too can have a 2020 Census side gig

The Office of Personnel Management is reminding federal employees that they too can earn extra money and be a part of history by working part-time with the U.S. Census Bureau for the 2020 count.

Generally, federal employees are prohibited from receiving pay from more than one federal government source, but some agencies have a dual employment agreement with the Census Bureau—28 according to last summer data, but a list on the Census website of dual agreements includes 45 entities.

Under Title 13, United States Code, Section 23(b), the bureau may hire federal employees with the approval of agency directors.

“The U.S. Census Bureau has begun its campaign to recruit hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country to fill a variety of temporary jobs, including recruiting assistants, office staff, census takers, and supervisory staff,” the Feb. 6 guidance on guidance on how to have dual employment agreements with the Census Bureau, states, adding, “Because of these efforts, we are beginning to receive questions from current federal employees about accepting employment for the 2020 Census.”

The guidance also directs readers to the website to apply, learn more about Census jobs, and to browse frequently asked questions about the application process and pay for current federal employees.

Some popular questions include whether feds should still apply if their agency is not on the list even though an agency official contends it should be, which the answer is yes, to still apply, as some agreements may not yet be activated; how long the jobs last—several  weeks; and job hours, which are flexible depending on the position.
