DHS finds way to pay Coast Guard workers during shutdown

Servicemembers and retirees of the National Coast Guard were paid their regularly scheduled paychecks despite the ongoing partial government shutdown, Military Times reports.

According to the report, in a message to all Coast Guard members, Vice Commandant Adm. Charles Ray said that Department of Homeland Security officials were able to identify a way to pay the military workforce for the December 31st pay date.

This was a one-time action and does not apply to the next pay period of Jan. 15, the article notes, adding that officials did not specify how they managed to cover the $75 million funding shortage and without emergency legislation paychecks will stop completely.
