TRICARE announces new fee structure, enrollment policy

TRICARE has announced changes to its enrollment policies and a new fee system, which will go into effect at the beginning of 2018.

Beginning January 1, all TRICARE Standard and non-activated Guard and Reserve users will see point-of-service fee changes, TRICARE announced  Sept. 28.

The new system will combine the TRICARE Standard and Extra plans into new program called, "TRICARE Select," which will shift its members to a flat point-of-service fee that will count towards the deductible and annual caps. Those caps are $1,000 for active-duty and TRICARE Reserve Select users and $3,000 for all others.

Members will fall into either one of two categories based on active duty entry date, and each group will have different enrollment fees and out-of-pocket costs.

Other significant changes include merging the North and South regions into the East region and requiring new members to manually enroll in the TRICARE system during an annual open enrollment period, unlike the current policy where beneficiaries receive health benefits automatically.
