OPM trims retirement claims backlog in December

The Office of Personnel Management last month trimmed its retirement claims backlog to the lowest level since December 2014.
OPM logged 4,753 new claims last month, processing 5,916 claims and cutting its backlog to 11,399, which was slightly less than the 11,669 the agency reported in the same month a year earlier.
The December 2015 inventory was down 893 claims from the 12,562 claims OPM tallied at the end of November.
OPM said that it had ended the year with78 percent of claims processed in 60 days or less. In December, according to the agency, it processed 83 percent of claims in 60 days or less. Claims cleared out in December that were processed in 60 days or less took an average of 40 days; those processed in more than 60 days took an average of 104 days, OPM reported.
Backlogged claims at year-end were above earlier forecasts. The agency had projected receiving 5,600 new claims in December and processing 6,500, to finish the year with a projected 9,242 claims in its inventory.
