Hello, Sorry if this has already been addressed, but I read somewhere that the dependent age limit for Health insurance coverage has been extended to age 26 or 27 (from the current limit of 22 yrs old) to be effective in July, 2010. Is this official? Thanks.

HR2978 is still in committee.
It is not yet law. It has not even passed the house, let alone the senate. The best place to determine the status of any proposed legislation is the thomas page at the Library of Congress website. |

If you are enrolled in the SAMBA plan, they offer coverage for your dependent children ages 22-27. Premiums are higher for the kids in that group: $120BW/$260MO |

jagfan..... how does this work. I did see article by Mike Causey on this (10-26-09) but when I read the brochure it seemed the age cutoff was still 22. Daughter turns 22 in 10/10. Do you have a specific page in brochure that talks about this???

It is actually separate coverage that you buy thru Samba. You do have to be enrolled in the Samba plan for yourself and spouse, if applicable. Then you can buy the separate coverage for the overage dependent.
See the Samba website. It has the details. |

edalder..thanks for the info. I did go back and re-read the brochure and found info under "Non-FEHB Benefits, Pg 62". I will check web site for more details. Have BCBS - BASIC now and SAMBA was in my top prospects.

Do you have any new info on covering a child over age 22 and if the new law which goes into effect July 12, 2010, will allow new employees to enroll them?

I believe it will not go in effect until January. It would be best to ask this in the benefits forum.

My understanding is that Congress must pass separate legislation for the benefit to become available sooner than next open season.
If it does so, I am guessing that the benefit will become available in September, which should be convenient to you because you would not have to add back a dependent that had already "aged off". It also is my understanding, however, that if you want to add back a dependent that has already passed that age 22 milestone, you may have to wait until open season and that coverage for said dependent age 23 to 26 would not be effective until January of 2011. From the parent of a dependent who is now 23. Edited by edalder - 01 Jun 2010 at 7:50pm |
