Right now I have BCBS Standard and I am considering switching to SAMBA standard. It seems like all of my doctors would be covered and not much would change except that I would save money. I do have a prescription that I will have to pay more for but I'm willing to pay $9.00 extra each month to save $70.00 biweekly. Does anyone have SAMBA? Can you tell me your experience with it?

I also have BCBS Standard am considering SAMBA and NALC. In fact, I started a new topic in the Financial discussion prior to seeing this post. Right now, our FEHB and FEDVIP issues are being discussed under several differnt forums and groups. I don't know if it is possible, but it would be nice to have all our FEHB and FEDVIP discussions in a dedicated area. The mods have done a great job with the new set up and wonder if they would consider this option.

I've narrowed my choices to SAMBA and NALC with SAMBA slightly in the lead. Both use the CIGNA PPO network. I've only found minor differences btw the two plans. SAMBA dr visit copays are $20 vice NALC $15. SAMBA labs are no charge with Quest vice NALC no charge with Quest and LabCorp. There are a few other differences involving mental health, PT/OT, hearing aids, etc. The big difference is the prescription costs. So I did a comparison of the plans using all the RXs I routinely take. They would cost me about $250 a year more with SAMBA. However, when I include the annual plan premium, I come out ahead with SAMBA. I'd be saving about $250 a year over NALC and about $600 over BCBS Std. Plus, I prefer the MEDCO mail order pharmacy and extensive retail locations over the Caremark and CVS pharmacies, although that would not be a deal breaker in my decision process.
Have you made your decision yet? I'd be interested to know if your research has come up with anything new.

I have decided to stay with bcbs standard. I was considering not only SAMBA but GEHA too. I sat down with my mom who did medical billing for a number of years and she explained a few things to me. She said in my area we don't have any quest labs. We have a ton of labcorps. Our prescription coverage is better and with the other plans if we go in for a surgery we have to pay a deductible for each surgeon. With bcbs we only pay one deductible for all. This is important because my husband had some knee tumors removed 2 years ago and we did not have to pay much but he is having some knee pain and I am concerned that he may need another surgery in the future. I really wanted to save money but I think in the long run bcbs is the best bet especially concerning surgery. I do have to say every time I have called bcbs for anything they have always been very helpful and courteous so I think I am making the right decision.

Wow, a separate $300 deductible for the surgeon? When I read the booklet, I didn't interpret the deductible in that manner. It was my understanding the plans discussed all had a single $300 deductible for medical and surgical combined. |

This morning I contacted both NALC and SAMBA to inquire about the deductible. Both assured me they have a single deductible that covers both med and surg. There is no separate surgeon or surgical deductible. There is a good possibility I will be having surgery during 2010 so that info was important to me. In addition, when I initally compared the plans I had overlooked an important detail about SAMBA . If you are hospitalized, you pay the $200 copay for room and board and 15% for other services and supplies. With NALC there is no charge for the other services and supplies like rads, labs, etc. Looks like NALC now has an edge for my needs.Deciding on a plan shouldn't be this difficult. One almost needs a degree to decipher all the plans and their variances.

I have been checking SAMBA and NALC myself (have BCBS Basic). You are right about SAMBA hospitalization percentage. Have to watch NALC, because if you have OUTpatient surgery, you pay 15% of allowance. Had 3 in 2009, with BCBS, and allowance was $7800. I paid $450, for surgeron and facility copays. With NALC (figuring allowance similar to BCBS) would have paid $1170 (15% of $7800). It comes down to realistically projecting what services you will use and hope for the best. I would love to use NALC, because drugs much cheaper (mail order), but I can not be sure what other services will come up.

You're right about the 15% charge for almost everything except office visits. Last year I paid out about $2,200 for those charges (had surgery and mutliple costly tests and procedures) plus $875 in mail order RXs. BCBS Basic RX plan would have cost me $1500. So, the bottom line is I could have saved about $1575 for medical care plus the difference in premium costs if I were with Basic.
I use the Mayo Clinic for all my care (primary and specialty) and if I could be assured that their contract with BCBS was good through 2010, I'd switch. But, I've been unable to ascertain when their contract expires. Called Blue and they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me. I know the CIGNA contract is good another few years.

I was on BC standard for over 3 decades and switched to NALC last year and had pretty good service and coverage. For 2010 rates went up for NALC and was considering Samba or BC. The Rx is probably best on NALC as BC will have a 3 tier system for next year. Samba seems very straightforward, most coverage is 15 percent throughout but they have a 3 tier system too for RX.
After lots of research, the biggest difference is that NALC and Samba have an additional 4,000-5000 RX and mental health for catostrophic over BC. Nalc charges 25% for co surgeons as in book.

I was on BC and switched to NALC last year and was looking at Samba as well. They seem to have a very well layed out plan. But should be aware of catostrophic, which comes to about 12,000 if you add in the separate 5,000 RX required and separate mental health, which is another 4,000. The latter is not a concern for me but extra 5,000 for RX is a lot. Im thinking of switching back to BC because if you use meds for about 1,000 a yr..and another 1,000 in medical..you have 2000 left to meet catastrophic or no co pays..where as with Samba or Nalc, you max out at double or triple rate.
