So long story short I had quit my job at the Postal Service after being harassed by my supervisor. He made my life a living hell and my union did nothing to help me. I was a good employee, showing up on time rarely calling in sick (i think the only time i did is when i was in the hospital) and he treated me like a slave. When I questioned why I was the only one working back to back shifts (ie: 1130am-630pm then back at 230am-11am) or split shifts he started talking down to me and treating me like a child. I asked my union for help but they kept brushing it off saying they would fix it and I stayed for 2 months waiting, hoping something would change and it never did... So I got tired of being on mood-stabilizers and anti-anxiety meds so I quit. I informed my union I was quitting 3 weeks prior to putting in my notice and they didn't even bother to respond. Is there anything I can do to get my job back? Hire a lawyer? File an EEO? ANYTHING? Please help.... I did like my job, until that supervisor showed up and chased me right outta there....

I know how you feel because I have done the same thing at several jobs in the past, including walking out on the spur of the moment. It cost me lots of money and lots of advancement potential, but sometimes it feels like you can only stand things so long and then you have to leave or explode. The USPS is a place that seems perfectly designed to put people like you and me in a position where we just can't stand it.
That said, you need to forget the Postal Service and move on. You're not going to get your job back and you probably don't have the money and time to waste years in lawsuits that won't get you anywhere.
Here's a thought----since you gave notice and since you were a good employee, why don't you try to get a job elsewhere in the federal government? They are hiring lots of people right now. Go to http://federalgovernmentjobs.us/ and put in youir location and see what's available. Since you've already been employed by USPS, you have been vetted, and that should be a plus. Also, your former supervisor can't do anything except give you a good reference---in fact, he or she will probably not even be the person to handle that. The national personnel office will probably just answer any questions based on what's in your file (attendance records, etc.), which you say is very good.
Best of luck to you.

Newbie and Parafrog and anyonw else new-
I don't mean to be disrespectful at all so please do not take this in a negative way.
When you are new at the P.O. you are at their beckon call. whatever it takes to get through probation is the flavor for the months ahead.
Not to toot my own horn, but I was 46 years old when I started. It took almost 5 years to make regular. I remember a co-worker who started at that time too. We worked so many hours an investigative team came in and asked both of us when the last time was that we had a day off.
We looked at each other and laughed. (At that time express mail was done on Sundays)
Times are tough, so get tough with them.

parafrog The post office tries to be a para-military operation, you are a federal employee and you are required to follow the orders of your superiors (just like the military), unless they are unlawful orders. Even then, just like in the military you should follow the order and then complain about it later (unless of course they are ordering you to commit a criminal act). From your other posts you indicate that you are a TE who was just recently reappointed for a third term. Three years as a TE probably in only one or two offices, does not qualify you as understanding the post office. After you have been around 5-10 years and worked at multiple offices then you will begin to understand what the PO is truly like. And before you ask I am a ten year veteran of the Marine Corps (infantry) and was an 18 year postal employee before I transferred to another agency. My first four years at the post office were spent in one office, occasionally going to others to help. I, like you, thought I knew all about the post office and then I bid on a T-6 route in another office and it was like working for a completely different company. Over the years I worked for the PO, I worked in 5 different offices, in two different districts and each and every one was different. Postalwiz tries to help people on this forum, and even though his/her perception of the PO vs. military may be wrong, it is not too far off. Before you insult someone who has helped a lot of people you should realize that with your limited experience, you are a relative boot in the post office. |

To postalgirl82: I had a very similar situation going on with myself. I was an employee with over 25 years in the PO and our pay location had acquired the supervisor from hell. He was a military guy and expected complete and utter dominance over his employees. If you disagreed with him you were marked for life. Being the opionated Yankee that I am , we had many verbal discussions and finally the harassment began. He targeted me and several others on the pay location. His nastiness and lying were the stuff of legends. I initated an EEO agains the tyrant, but as we all know , they are pretty much settled in favor of the offending supervisor. I also wrote a long, sincere letter to my congressperson (as did another employee) about what I was experiencing with the supervisor. It was met with swift reply by the liaison at her office and an internal ivestigation began. There were so many complaints against him, they had to respond. Since I had never had an discipline issue with any other supervisors in my career, I guess they finally realized he was targeting me. Evenutally, after almost a year of sleeplessness and worry, he backed off and maybe, possibly realized I was an asset and a diligent worker. I hope you kept good records and documented any incidents or had witnesses to your abuse. It may not be too late for you to get your congressperson involved. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you do get your job back again. By the way, this last early out came at the most opportune time for me. I was retired as of 10/31 09 and to all of you who still have not made up your mind...it's wonderful! God Bless!

hey rock.
semper fi. 20 years 0321. you should know what that is.
and by your perception of the post office compared to the marines you know you are wrong.
paramiltary unit? i spent 3 years with blackwater when i retired. thats a para-military unit.
you seem like what you are trying to say is..........unlike the marines where all marines go to 1 bootcamp for all mos's( actually 2) parris island and sandiego. anyways all marines are basically trained the same way. and all marines follow the same sets of guidelines.
you know this if you spent 10 years in my same branch.
now.........you just admitted that all post office stations run by different sets of guidelines?
thats contradicting your post.
and look killer..........i work 5 different post offices. all 5 have different be back times. all 5 have different ways of returning outgoing mail. ( seperating netflix, letters etc) all 5 have different starting times. all 5 have different times when they bring in there te's and ptf's all 5 have different times of the month when they turn in there edit books. all 5 have different dress codes( clerks wering reg clothes, uniforms etc) all 5 have different llv parking procedures) all 5 have different time clock procedures( labels where numbers are numbers where labels are) all 5 have different scan and dept labels( in the llvs, on the out going doors, on a darn light post in the middle of the parking lot, etc)
one does not even have llvs( they use there own povs. yes city carriers)
so dude! i know this. i may be a boot to the post office, but there is not much there to figure out!
and it still does not strike me as any type of military ran unit.
do you remember in bootcamp when you got issued cammies?
wheres mine? its been 3 years?
do you remember when you had insurance and health care benefits? wheres mine?
do you remember when you had height and weight standards? ha! you seen how fat some of these clowns are?
do you remember getting deployed for 6 months at a time?
do you remember when you got promoted past someone who was slower and not as hard a worker as you? post office only promotes when some one retires
do you remember when you ratted some one out what happened? grievs dont happen in the military?
do you remember team work? you think the p.o compares?
come one man. i know postal wiz is knowledgeable with the post office.
my whole point is........ i know more about both. p.o and military than she does?
wouldnt you agree? i have served in both, she has not!
