Principessa -- The wait period is two years to go from Step 5 to Step 6. It's also two years from Step 6 to 7.
The time between within-grade-increases jumps to three years when going from Step 7 to 8, Step 8 to 9, and Step 9 to 10. Even if you are under NSPS, and you convert back to GS, the answer is: yes -- I've heard from several fairly reliable sources that time in your "equivalent" current step (while you've been in NSPS) will count for promotion to the next step. So if I followed your question, you would become a GS-5, Step 6 on June 1, 2010. You would jump to Step 7 on June 1, 2012. After that, next step increase would be three years -- June 1, 2015. But...perhaps you will be promoted to higher grade before that? ![]() |

Thanks George. That is exactly what I needed to know. At 51, I am a late bloomer to Uncle Sam's workplace having started as a temp in 2001. We have finished establishing our objectives for the coming rating period (interim??) and I have heard something "magical" is supposed to happen by April 2010. I wonder if we will have to go through 2010 with NSPS, or will it start phasing out after mid year. With any luck our installation will be "last". My DH is CSRS and is praying for a VSIP or a VERA....he's a WG and didn't have to go through this mess.
Basically, I think folks want to know what they will "go back to", once it's all over.

Quoting from OPM: "waiting periods are 52 weeks for steps 1-3, 104 weeks for steps 4-6, and 156 weeks for steps 7-9". Hope this helps. http://www.opm.gov/oca/pay/HTML/wgifact.asp Edited by DOD_Analyst - 17 Nov 2009 at 5:59pm |
