More than 30,000 furlough challenges have been filed so far at the Merit Systems Protection Board, Government Executive reports.
Almost all of the appeals are from Defense Department employees, according to the report. So overwhelming is the caseload that MSPB—a small agency with about 200 employees—announced it will put off processing and adjudicating the DOD challenges. MSPB will continue to process non-DOD furlough challenges, the report said.
A posting on the MSPB website said the board hopes the delay will allow it to gain "a better understanding of the claims being raised, the work locations of the appellants, the MSPB offices in which the appeals have been filed, and whether or not the appellants are represented.”
