DOD furloughs to begin in June

Furloughs at the Defense Department will not begin until mid- to late June, according to a news report from the department.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced on March 28 that furlough days would be trimmed back from a previous estimate of 22 days to 14 days. A news release from American Forces Press Service the same day quoted a senior DOD official as saying that notices for those furloughs will go out in early May.

Notices must go out to employees at least 30 days before furloughs can be implemented.

Furloughs now will be spread over a period of seven two-week pay periods, ending Sept. 30. According to the quoted official, the department is still determining which of its more than 700,000 employees will be exempted from the furloughs.
