Emergency program helps feds donate leave to Sandy victims

Federal employees who want to help other feds affected by Hurricane Sandy can now donate their unused leave time to those affected by the disaster.

Federal employees who want to help other feds affected by Hurricane Sandy can now donate their unused leave time to those affected by the disaster.

President Obama issued a memorandum directing the Office of Personnel Management to establish an emergency leave transfer program that allows employees in the executive and judicial branches, or an agency leave bank to donate unused annual leave to employees affected by the hurricane.

The time is intended to help those severely affected -- such as having lost a loved one or property, or experienced serious injury, or physical or mental illness – use the additional time off from work to recover without using their own paid leave.

Those interested must submit a written application to their agency. In the event that more time is needed than donated, agencies can contact OPM for assistance in receiving additional time from their agencies.
