BRAC requests may persist despite opposition

Although the House passed a bill last week prohibiting the Defense Department from proposing, planning or carrying out base realignments and closures in 2013, the department may continue to press for them.

Although the House passed a bill last week prohibiting the Defense Department from proposing, planning or carrying out base realignments and closures in 2013, the department may continue to press for them, the Federal Times reports.

DOD has asked for two more  BRAC rounds -- one in 2013 and one in 2015 -- as a part of its fiscal 2013 budget request.

But lawmakers who oppose BRAC are more vocal than those who support it, said Dorothy Robyn, deputy undersecretary of defense for installations and environment. Robyn said if the request is denied, the department very likely do as it has in the past, and simply continue to submit requests until one is approved .
