DOD posts housing allowance rates for 2012

The Defense Department last week posted basic allowance for housing (BAH) rates for 2012.

The Defense Department last week posted basic allowance for housing (BAH) rates for 2012.

DOD said that overall BAH rates will increase 2 percent on average in 2012. Service members with dependents will receive BAH increases of about $39 per month on average. The rates—which are calculated based on average rents, utility costs and renter’s insurance in a given area—become effective Jan. 1, 2012.

In areas where BAH rates go down in 2012, decreases will apply only to members who are newly reporting to those locations. Individual rate protection ensures that service members already assigned to a given location are not affected by a BAH rate decrease, and that they receive an increase if the rate goes up.

DOD estimates that during 2012 it will pay more than 1 million service members about $20 billion in BAH.
